Are you looking for the best nightlife experience in Hanoi Old Quarter? Look no further than Ta Hien Beer Street in Hanoi! Here’s everything you need to know about spending a night on Beer Street!

Vietnam might not be quite as famous for its nightlife as the likes of Bangkok, Gili T, Phuket and Siem Reap, but the nightlife in Hanoi is pretty incredible, especially if you spend an evening on the infamous Beer Street, also known as Ta Hien Street.

Located in the Old Quarter of Hanoi, Ta Hien Beer Street is an awesome nightlife experience for locals, backpackers and nomads who now call Hanoi their home. During our one month in Hanoi, we frequented Beer Street a few times (for research purposes, obviously… 👀), so we managed to visit a fair few of the best bars and restaurants on the famous street!

In my guide below, I’m sharing everything you need to know about Beer Street Hanoi, including how much you can expect to pay for a beer, where to find the best bars and restaurants, plus much more!

I apologise for the lack of pictures featured throughout this post; most of the time when we were on Beer Street in Hanoi, I just forgot to take any pictures!

What is the name of the Beer Street in Hanoi?

Beer Street Hanoi is known locally as Ta Hien and it’s famous for being the best place in Hanoi for nightlife.

Within a small part of the Old Quarter, Ta Hien Street is home to dozens of bars, restaurants and live music spots. It’s an utterly chaotic part of Hanoi, but it’s definitely worth experiencing for yourself!

How much is a beer in Hanoi?

A draft beer in Hanoi can cost as little as 5,000 VND at super local places, but you’ll most likely see prices for beer between 15,000 VND and 40,000 VND in the more popular tourist spots.

Local beer such as Bia Hà Nội and Bia Việt are some of the cheapest beers you’ll find in Hanoi, whereas imported beer such as Tiger and Heineken will likely cost around 20,000 to 40,000 VND, depending on where you are.

Where to find Ta Hien Beer Street Hanoi

Hanoi Beer Street history

Ta Hien Beer Street is located in Hanoi Old Quarter, about half a mile north of Hoan Kiem Lake.

Old Quarter Ta Hien Corner is considered to be the start of Beer Street and from there, it encompasses a few hundred metres north of this corner, but there are also a few other spots around that area that can be classed as the Beer Street “district” of Hanoi thanks to the many bars and restaurants.

You can get the exact Google Maps link to the start of Ta Hien Beer Street Hanoi here!

Address: Tạ Hiện, P. Lương Ngọc Quyến, Hàng Buồm, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội 100000, Vietnam.

What is the best Bia Hoi in Hanoi, Vietnam?

What is the best Bia Hoi in Hanoi, Vietnam?

Bia hơi translates to “fresh beer” and it is the most popular type of local draft beer in Vietnam. It’s typically served from a keg or a cask, rather than in a can or a bottle, so if you see places selling bia hơi, you know that you’ll be getting the best, freshest and cheapest beer in Hanoi, Vietnam!

As well as the traditional draft beer, there are also many other types of beer available in Vietnam, with the most common/popular being:

  • Saigon Beer
  • Bia Hà Nội
  • Bia Việt
  • 333
  • Tiger Beer (Matt’s favourite!)
  • Heineken Beer

The best bars on Beer Street

The best bars on Beer Street

In the section below, I’ve put together a list of some of the best bars on Beer Street. You can use the map above to find each location or simply copy and paste each bar’s address as listed below!

Tôm’s Bar

Tôm's Bar

We visited Tom’s Bar a couple of times during our one month in Hanoi because it was always super busy and they offered free shots with any drink!

It’s definitely one of the more expensive bars on Beer Street, with an imported bottle of beer costing 50,000 VND and a Strongbow cider costing 100,000 VND, but we met so many great people at this bar on several occasions and the free shot with any drink softened the blow of the expensive drinks a bit!

Address: 2B P. Tạ Hiện, Hàng Buồm, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

SportivO

If you’re looking for one of the best sports bars in Hanoi Old Quarter, SportivO is the place to be. As it’s geared towards tourists who want to watch international sports such as football, AFL and rugby, the prices are pretty expensive for Vietnam standards, especially compared to some of the other bars on Beer Street.

While we didn’t really spend much time here due to the pricey drinks, it was always absolutely heaving on a weekend whenever we walked past, so it’s definitely one of the best spots if you want to watch international sports in Hanoi!

Address: 39, Hàng Buồm, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội 11010, Vietnam.

Coco Bar

Coco Bar

Coco Bar is one of the most highly rated spots on Ta Hien and it’s such a fun place that always has great music playing.

The offer both food and drink at relatively reasonable prices and it’s also situated right in the heart of Beer Street, so you can enjoy such a fun and lively atmosphere!

Address: 2B P. Tạ Hiện, Hàng Buồm, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

Secret Bar & Pub

Secret Bar & Pub is another one of the most highly rated bars on Beer Street and it caters to both fancy Western prices, as well as some local deals!

Depending on the day of the week that you visit, you can enjoy deals such as free shots, buy one get one free and more. They’re most notably famed for their extensive range of cocktails, as well as a DJ and a great dance floor!

Address: 1 P. Tạ Hiện, Phố cổ Hà Nội, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

Phúc Lâm

If you’re looking for a much more reasonably priced spot that has more of a local feel to it, be sure to pay a visit to Phúc Lâm.

They have dozens of things on their food menu, with prices ranging from 50,000 VND to 250,000 VND for the most expensive items.

They also serve both local and imported beer for around 30,000 VND, as well as Strongbow cider for just 40,000 VND.

Address: 2 +Tạ Hiện, Hàng Buồm, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội 100000, Vietnam.

Bia Phố Cổ Tạ Hiện

Bia Phố Cổ Tạ Hiện is one of the first places you’ll see on your left if you enter Beer Street at the Ta Hien Beer Street Hanoi Old Quarter entrance.

They also serve very reasonably priced food and drink and you can sit on the tiny plastic chairs just outside the storefront and enjoy watching the chaos of a night on Beer Street!

Address: 18 P. Tạ Hiện, Hàng Buồm, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

Northern Soul Rooftop Bar

For excellent views of Beer Street from above, head to the Northern Soul Rooftop Bar which is just before the main part of Ta Hien.

Food and drink are a little pricier here thanks to its awesome vantage point of Beer Street, but you can still get a local beer for around 40,000 VND, as well as cocktails for around 90,000 VND (approximately £3).

Address: 31 P. Tạ Hiện, Hàng Buồm, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

Top tips for visiting Beer Street Hanoi

Top tips for visiting Hanoi Beer Street
  • Most beers are priced between 15,000 VND and 40,000 VND, but you can definitely pay more than that in some of the fancier bars that are geared more towards tourists. Stick to the outdoor food stalls and little local places for the cheapest beer in Hanoi!
  • Keep your belongings on your person at all times! Beer Street gets incredibly crowded, especially on a Saturday night and you’ll constantly be walking into people, so you need to ensure that you take care of your personal items at all times.
  • Local vendors will try and get you in their pubs by offering discounted drinks and free shots and it can be a little overwhelming to know which bar to choose. Be confident in your approach and only visit the bars where you feel like you’re getting a good deal!
  • Make sure you’re equipped with antibacterial hand sanitiser and a pack of tissues as many of the toilets on Beer Street don’t have any toilet paper or soap and water to wash your hands. Some of the toilets are also very questionable but we’re very used to it after many years of travelling in Southeast Asia!
  • You’ll find lots of locals walking up and down the street trying to sell you everything from hats to souvenirs and even shoe cleaning services! Always politely decline the shoe cleaning services as we’ve known many people to pay for this service to then find their shoes completely ruined and being charged even more to “fix” them again! Just calmly, but confidently say no!
  • If you’re staying outside of the Old Quarter and don’t want to walk back to your accommodation late at night (though we found Hanoi to be very safe), you can order a Grab taxi via the app so you can track your ride and only pay a set fare, rather than getting a local taxi.

Even if you don’t enjoy drinking beer (or any alcohol for that matter!), seeing Beer Street in person is a truly eye-opening experience and one that you’re not likely to forget any time soon!
