Are you planning a trip to Hanoi and want to know where to find all the best places to eat banh mi? This ultimate guide to the best banh mi in Hanoi is for you!

On our first visit to Vietnam at the start of 2020, I really wasn’t a fan of banh mi at all! I liked the idea of the traditional Vietnamese sandwich, with its delicious crusty bread and meat-stuffed insides, but I wasn’t very adventurous when it came to vegetables, spices and coriander (which are all major components of a banh mi).

I still cannot stand coriander, but on our most recent trip to Hanoi when we spent an entire month living in the city, I really grew to enjoy banh mi and considering they’re nearly always £1 or less, it’s hard not to enjoy them when they’re so cheap!

Similarly to our self-guided pizza walking tour in NYC, we decided to put together an itinerary to find the best banh mi in Hanoi and during our one month there, we managed to visit over a dozen banh mi places!

The ultimate guide below features 12 best banh mi in Hanoi, along with a map so you can find all the exact spots and locations yourself!

What is a traditional Vietnamese banh mi?

Best Bahn Mi In Hanoi, Vietnam

A traditional banh mi usually consists of a short French baguette with a thin, crusty exterior and a soft, airy texture inside. Its contents vary depending on where you are in Vietnam and the exact food vendor you purchase it from, but a typical banh mi usually includes a light spread of pâté, a protein such as pork or chicken and is then topped with grated carrot, cucumber, coriander (cilantro) and usually a light layer of chilli sauce.

Every banh mi in Hanoi (and Vietnam) will be slightly different as some don’t include coriander, some include numerous types of meat and some are completely vegetarian or vegan!

The great thing about banh mi is that they can usually be tailored to suit your preferences! For example, I always ask for my banh mi without coriander because I absolutely despise the stuff!

1. The Banhmi – the best banh mi in Hanoi

The Banh Mi is the best banh mi in Hanoi (in my opinion!). It’s a little more expensive (although still less than £1.40 for a sandwich!) than some of the more local banh mi places in Hanoi, but it’s 100% worth the extra little bit of money for a truly delicious sandwich!

Instead of a local food stall like many of the other banh mi places on this list, The Banhmi is a restaurant that looks like a Greek taverna! We always love the feel of eating a banh mi on the street in Hanoi with all the other locals, but it made a nice change to sit inside at The Banhmi and enjoy our meal in the comforts of a beautifully decorated establishment.

I’ve already mentioned my utter disdain for coriander, so I’m always very grateful whenever I can ask for food without coriander in Vietnam as it’s such a huge part of the local cuisine and the wonderful staff at The Banhmi created my banh mi without even a trace of coriander in, which I was super grateful for!

I opted for the Vietnamese meatballs banh mi which was served with grated carrots, onions and cucumber and it’s probably the nicest and freshest veg we had inside a banh mi in Hanoi!

The meatballs were also so delicious and the bread was super soft on the inside, but it had just the right amount of crustiness on the outside. The fillings were also very generous and so yummy!

  • Vietnamese meatballs banh mi – 40,000 VND
  • Banh mi traditional – 35,000 VND

Address: 183 P. Hàng Bông, Hàng Bông, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

2. Bánh My Paté

On our quest to find the best banh mi in Hanoi, we discovered a tiny local place called Bánh My Paté which is just around the corner from the world-famous Banh Mi 25!

It’s one of the cheapest banh mi we had in Hanoi at just 25,000 VND and it was also one of the very best! It was so wonderful to sit on typical Vietnamese tiny plastic chairs just in front of the food stall with the locals and the sandwich itself was absolutely delicious!

The banh mi from Bánh My Paté was one of the most loaded sandwiches we had in Hanoi; we found some places to be a little sparse with the fillings, but Bánh My Paté positively overloaded the sandwich with pâté and shredded pork!

  • Banh mi with pâté and salted shredded pork – 25,000 VND

Address: 11 P Hàng Cá, Hàng Bồ, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

3. Banh Mi 25 Hanoi

Banh Mi 25 is one of the most highly-coveted places to eat in Hanoi and it actually has three different locations in Hanoi Old Quarter because it’s so popular (they’re all situated next door/over the road from each other!).

We managed to get a seat inside the main building of Banh Mi 25 and were surprised to discover that there were plenty of locals, as well as many tourists!

We opted for the honey grilled chicken with cheese (no coriander for me!) and the BBQ pork, pâté and smoked sausage.

The honey grilled chicken banh mi was one of the tastiest we had in Hanoi as the sweetness of the honey was absolutely incredible paired with the chicken and the freshly grated carrot, onion and cucumber.

We also shared an orange and pineapple juice which doesn’t have anything to do with the deliciousness of the sandwiches from Banh Mi 25, but I’d still recommend getting one anyway!

Banh Mi 25 also have some of the best vegetarian/vegan options in Hanoi!

Despite being one of the most popular places in Hanoi, Banh Mi 25 isn’t outrageously expensive, with most sandwiches costing around 40,000 VND (approximately £1.36 GBP/$1.65 USD).

  • Honey grilled chicken with cheese – 40,000 VND
  • BBQ pork, pâté and smoked sausage – 40,000 VND
  • Orange and pineapple juice – 35,000 VND

Address: 25 P Hàng Cá, Hàng Bồ, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

4. Bami Bread Bánh Mì Hội An

When we came across Bami Bread Bánh Mì Hội An, we didn’t actually realise that it’s part of a chain in Hanoi (see number 11 below), but the banh mi we ate at the two spots were so different, that I wanted to include them as two separate spots on this list!

The BBQ chicken sandwich we ate at Bami Bread Bánh Mì Hội An was on of the best we had in Hanoi! Unlike the banh mi we had at the other branch of Bami Bread, this one was absolutely delicious, with a generous amount of filling, a healthy helping of chilli sauce and a tasty crusty bread.

The only thing I didn’t like about this banh mi is that it had coriander in (like most do!), but as Matt and I were sharing (due to us sampling multiple banh mi in one day for ~research~!) and the fact that he loves coriander so much, I didn’t want to ask for it without!

The great thing about Bami Bread Bánh Mì Hội An is that most of their sandwiches are 29,000 VND (less than £1 GBP/$1.20 USD!) and they even have a plain pâté banh mi for just 19,000 VND (£0.65 GBP/$0.78 USD) which makes it so easy to eat super cheap in Hanoi!

  • BBQ chicken banh mi – 29,000 VND

Address: 88b Trần Hưng Đạo, Cửa Nam, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

5. Bánh mì Phố

Bánh mì Phố is another banh mi franchise in Hanoi, with locations dotted all over the city, so you’re probably never too far away from one!

This was one of the first banh mi sandwiches we had when we arrived in Hanoi for a month, so I opted for the “safer” option of pork sausage with cheese which had no vegetables when I was still convinced that I didn’t really like banh mi!

After eating at Bánh mì Phố, I realised that banh mi definitely need at least a little bit of veg in, so it was essentially the sandwich that caused me to enjoy them a lot more!

They’re some of the more expensive banh mi in Hanoi, ranging from 30,000 VND to 50,000 VND for some of the larger sandwiches, but they’re still such a super affordable snack!

  • Pork sausage with cheese banh mi (small) – 35,000 VND
  • Grilled chicken banh mi (large) – 40,000 VND

Address: 64 P. Hàng Bông, Cửa Đông, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội 11015, Vietnam.

6. Vân Mít Bánh Mì

Vân Mít Bánh Mì was one of the first stalls we ate at when we arrived in Hanoi for a month and the super affordable pâté and fried pork sandwich did not disappoint! There was a generous amount of filling inside, with a delicious helping of chilli sauce and the only thing that slightly let this banh mi down was that the bread was a tad too crusty and not soft enough on the inside!

  • Pâté and fried pork – 25,000 VND

Address: 52 P. Lý Quốc Sư, Hàng Trống, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

7. Bánh Mì Ngọc Thuốc

Bánh Mì Ngọc Thuốc

If you’re looking for a more boujee place to enjoy a banh mi in Hanoi, head to Bánh Mì Ngọc Thuốc which is just a couple of hundred metres from Train Street.

It’s a multi-level restaurant with seating both indoors and outdoors and it’s a gorgeous little place to eat while you take a break from the intense Vietnamese heat!

The fillings of the sandwiches from Bánh Mì Ngọc Thuốc where very delicious and generous, but the bread was a little stale, which is why it’s not ranked higher on this list.

We also ordered a frozen lemonade to share (which actually costs more than the banh mi!) and this was so scrumptious and incredibly refreshing!

  • Pork and chicken banh mi – 30,000 VND
  • Pork banh mi – 30,000 VND
  • Frozen lemonade – 38,000 VND

Address: 100-C2 Tập thể, 34A P. Trần Phú, Điện Biên, Ba Đình, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

8. Bánh Mỳ Đức Long Kebab

I wasn’t actually sure whether to include Bánh Mỳ Đức Long Kebab in this list of the top banh mi spots in Hanoi as it is definitely more of a kebab than a traditional banh mi, but when we saw locals eating there (and no tourists!), I thought it would be appropriate to include it in this round-up!

While it’s not like a traditional Vietnamese banh mi, the sandwich at Bánh Mỳ Đức Long Kebab was absolutely delicious1 The bread was so fresh and soft on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside and it was positively teeming with fillings such as juicy kebab meat, crunchy red onion and cabbage and lashings of chilli sauce!

If you want to experience a non-traditional banh mi in Hanoi, be sure to add Bánh Mỳ Đức Long Kebab to your list!

  • Doner kebab banh mi – 40,000

Address: 5 P. Lương Ngọc Quyến, Hàng Buồm, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

9. Bánh My Mama

Bánh My Mama is a tiny little food stall just around the corner from St. Joseph Cathedral, so I’d recommend getting a banh mi and then heading to the cathedral to enjoy your food in front of one of the most beautiful sights in Hanoi!

We ordered the sausage, pork, egg and pâté sandwich which was good, but definitely not the best we had. The veg was a tad soggy and after trying multiple banh mi with egg, we decided that we weren’t the biggest fans of egg in the sandwich, so I would still recommend visiting Bánh My Mama, but I would suggest ordering a different filling!

  • Banh mi with sausage, pork, egg and pâté – 30,000 VND

Address: 54 P. Lý Quốc Sư, Hàng Trống, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

10. Bánh Mỳ 38 Đinh Liệt – Bánh Mỳ Phố Cổ

Bánh Mỳ 38 Đinh Liệt – Bánh Mỳ Phố Cổ is located just metres from Hoan Kiem Lake, so once we’d ordered our banh mi, we headed towards the lake (for the dozenth time during our one month in Hanoi!) and ate our sandwich there.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t our favourite banh mi in Hanoi as the egg and the pork floss just weren’t really to our taste. There was plenty of filling inside though and I would definitely order from there again, I would just go for a different filling.

  • Banh mi with pâté, egg and chicken – 25,000 VND

Address: 38 P. Đinh Liệt, Hàng Đào, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội 100000, Vietnam.

11. Bánh Mì Hội An

Bánh Mì Hội An is another branch of the Bami Bread franchise and unfortunately, this was one of our least favourite spots in Hanoi (unlike its sister branch which was one of our favourites!).

I think we were actually just a bit unlucky with our experience at Bánh Mì Hội An as the staff couldn’t get the sandwich out of the oven when they were heating it up, so the bread and filling was a little crispier than it should have been.

I also personally didn’t enjoy the char sui pork flavour as much as the other pork fillings we’d had, so it was just a little disappointing overall. If you do want to visit this franchise, I’d recommend sticking to Bami Bread Bánh Mì Hội An in #4 above!

  • Special sandwich (pâté & char sui pork) – 29,000 VND

Address: 98 P. Hàng Bạc, Hàng Buồm, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam.

12. Bánh Mì Vui

Bánh Mì Vui was the first place we had a banh mi during our one month in Hanoi and it also turned out to be our least favourite place!

It’s super cheap at just 25,000 VND (£0.85 GBP/$1 USD) and the filling was very generous, but it just wasn’t the tastiest banh mi we had in Hanoi.

However, if you want to try as many spots as possible, I would still recommend visiting Bánh Mì Vui to see how it compares to other places!

  • Special BBQ banh mi – 25,000 VND

Address: 7 P. Hàng Da, Hàng Bông, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội 100000, Vietnam.
